What Gulf interview panels actually ask Pakistani candidates

Gulf interviews are shorter, more direct and more about stability than most candidates expect. Prepare for the questions they really ask.

Having sat on the hiring side in Dubai for four years and debriefed hundreds of clients since, I can tell you that a Gulf panel spends far less time on clever behavioural questions than a European one. They want to know three things: can you do the job from week one, will you stay, and will you fit a multinational team.

The questions you will almost certainly get

Why do you want to move to the UAE, or Saudi Arabia. They are checking that you have thought about it and that your family is on board. Answer with the work: the scale of the projects, the market, the role. Never lead with salary or tax-free income, even though everyone knows.

When can you join, and what is your notice period. Have an exact answer. Candidates who say it depends lose to candidates who say six weeks from the offer letter. Do you have GCC experience. If not, say what you have done that is similar in scale and that you have worked with clients or teams from the region.

What are your salary expectations. Give a range in the local currency, monthly, and know which part of it you expect as basic. Saying a number in Pakistani rupees in a Dubai interview tells them you have not done your homework.

How to sound like you are already there

Use the job title and team names from their own website. Know their main competitors in the region. If it is a Saudi role, know what Vision 2030 project or sector they are part of and say one sentence about it. Panels notice this immediately because most candidates do not do it.

Finally, have two questions ready about the team, not the benefits. Who would I work with most closely, and what does a good first 90 days look like. It is the last impression you leave, and it is the one they remember.
